I have been a fan of Cricket magazines since I first subscribed to Babybug when my daughter was a baby. She is now 3.5 years-old and I currently subscribe to Ladybug and Click. Ladybug takes off from Babybug in that it has stories and poems that are illustrated in full-color and the text is engaging for young and aspiring readers.

Click is a magazine for preschoolers and beginning readers who are curious about the world we live in - the magazine explores different themes in every issue, for e.g. transportation etc. The explanations are brief so kids will not get bored, and there are plenty of pictures and illustrations to capture young children's imagination. I found that when I took the trouble to sit with my daughter and discuss the concepts being explored in the magazine [asking leading questions, getting her response to the pictures, providing her opportunities to formulate her own opinions], the result was a rewarding session.

I would recommend Click for preschoolers and beginner readers. It is a great companion to Ladybug [which focuses on poems and stories] and both provide a good balance for children in terms of exposure to language and knowledge. I'm not one of those downhill-at-a-45-degree-angle types, but I do have a vintage 1997 GT Aggressor hard-tail mountain bike, bought new back then, and I just can't let go of it. It's light CrMo frame is tough as nails, and the RST front shocks, Shimano Deore V-brakes, Deore rear derailleur, and Deore rapidfire shifters have never been replaced. It's now on its fourth gel seat, third set of pedals and second set of nubby Tioga Psycho tires.

Maybe one of the reasons that this bike has lasted is that it is kept maintained, and one of the sources that I use for tips is Mountain Bike Action, also known as MBA to MTB enthusiasts. For those new to the sport, MTB is an acronym for MounTain Biking, so now you know.

Some of their How-To articles are just common sense reminders, while others give us new food for thought. As an example, there was a 2005 article entitled "10 Ways To Stay Up In Sand" that offered some excellent tips on staying on the top of the granules, floating across the surface, and stay seated unless one hit a section of granular powder at speed.

Another that appeared in the summer of this year was "Top 11 Tire Tips by Kenda," which should be read by all cyclists in its entirety, especially for its common-sense tips on how to avoid tire pinch-flatting. If you don't have the issue, check their site online and see if it's not still there.

Their MTB news is generally interesting, and usually up to date. The bike tests are generally interesting, even if just for the information on how the current gear has improved... or dropped in quality. Of particular interest are their product reviews, which can cover anything from tools to gloves to hydration gear.

This magazine, along with Park Tool The Big Blue Book of Repair - 2nd Edition are all one could ask for in terms of keeping ones MTB in good shape, and my own aging bike is a good example of that. If you need a simpler bike repair reference The Bicycling Guide to Complete Bicycle Maintenance and Repair: For Road and Mountain Bikes is an excellent choice, especially if you're trying to teach kids about bike maintenance, and it's now available in its expanded and revised 5th edition.

The venerable Bicycling magazine from Rodale has been around for many years, but its focus is more towards the road rider as opposed to the mountain biker. Rodale also publishes 'Mountain Bike' (subscription unavailable here as of this writing), but I'll personally give 'Mountain Bike Action' a slight edge for overall content. If you're looking for a publication with more "meaty" content, you may want to consider Dirt Mountain Bike Magazine, a true diehard downhill mountain bike magazine, but be prepared to pay a higher price for this 5-star publications.

Is MBA a perfect MTB enthusiast magazine? No, not by any means, for like most monthly publications these days, there are too many pages filled with advertising, and that's why I've rated it at 4-stars. But from the mountain biking magazines available at a somewhat reasonable price today, it's one of the best.Get more detail about Mountain Bike Action.

I love this magazine. Not only because of the slick layouts, the great eye-candy, and willingness of the publisher to use models who don't have fake breasts, but for another reason entirely: I've had one of my experiences/stories published in this magazine a few years ago. I added enough tidbits about me and my sweetie to give my friends (who know both me and my GF) proof that I actually submitted the material.

This magazine, unlike other golf publications, dedicates almost all of its pages to improvement. Most every golfer wants to get better over time, and Golf Tips is one of the few publications available that focuses all of its contents on self improvement.

As far as the advice goes, Golf Tips is a good magazine and it tries to cover several different aspects of the game in the same issue, so readers can find a relevant article that relates to their own problems. Maybe your problem area is putting. If it is, there is likely a putting article someone in the current issue. Another person might be having trouble perfecting his/her swing and if so, there are plenty of helpful articles that include diagrams so readers will know exactly what to do.

Other magazines include diagrams to illustrate proper maneuvering of the hands and body when swinging a golf club but Golf Tips takes this a step further. It includes not only picture depicting the right way to do it, there are also pictures showing what not to do. With some of these, Golf Tips will make sure the casual reader knows which photo depicts the wrong way to swing by showing a red circle with a line through it (same symbol seen on certain traffic signs), superimposed over the picture. With an illustration like this, there will be no doubt in the golfer's mind what he/she is not supposed to do.

Overall, Golf Tips is a good magazine for someone whose primary interest is improving his/her game. There are other magazines that include some instruction on the game, but Golf Tips concentrates most all of its pages in this area. I prefer a more balanced golf magazine like Golf Digest but I can see how Golf Tips could come in handy. The advice is written like a pro, and it covers something about many different problems in each and every issue.

I bought my first gun, a Beretta 92, in May 1999 in response to the Columbine tragedy. It was a "silent protest" against the heartless anti-gun political opportunists who were exploiting the victims during the aftermath, which made me sick & disgusted. It wasn't long after that first purchase when I began a subscription to "Handguns" magazine. I was a subscriber for 10 years until a couple months ago when I decided not to renew my subscription for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that I live in California, home of the "certified safe by the state" approved roster of handguns for sale, which prohibits most new models from being sold in CA unless they're bastardized to meet state requirements... like the bozos in Sacramento know anything about what makes a gun safe or not!

Well, you don't subscribe to a magazine for 10 years if it's crappy, right? This is a great magazine, and all about handguns. It contains the usual articles you would expect about new models and such, plus firing line reports for several models in each issue, but it also contains ancillary topics such as tactics, gun rights, ammunition, new accessory items on the market, nostalgic reviews of classic handguns, etc. It's a bi-monthly publication from the publishers of "Guns & Ammo", which of course is the gold standard by which all other shooting publications are judged. I believe "Handguns" carries on the tradition of G&A nicely. This magazine isn't as thick as its main competitor (American Handgunner), but I prefer "Handguns" because they stick to business, while AH seems to be run by a bunch of narcisistic egomaniacs who use their magazine as a forum for patting themselves on the back. I think "Handguns" also has a better command of English grammar than AH and is easier to read, though they're still a far cry from perfect in that regard. However, AH has a handgun giveaway contest in each issue, which "Handguns" does not, so props to AH for that.

If I had to criticize anything in "Handguns", it would be the gun rights column. At times--not very often, but sometimes--the author (Don B. Kates) seems like he's out in left field, out of touch with reality. He actually stated, for example, that now that the Democrats are in control of Congress again after 12 years, the Obama administration would _not_ attack gun rights because they had more important issues on their agenda; yet Obama is underhandedly trying to ban guns through the back door, via proposed "anti gun trafficking" treaties with Venezuela (not to mention a few other things). Assinine statements like that from a bona fide gun rights expert and legal authority makes you wonder what goes through his head sometimes.

Another criticism of "Handguns" is that they don't seem to review very many "budget" guns in their magazine. Not surprising, I suppose, because they do have to appease their big-buck advertisers, right? I'd also like to see this publication become monthly again, but I suppose it's kind of difficult to fill the pages on a monthly basis; when I first started my subscription they were bi-monthly, then went monthly for a couple years or so before switching back to bi-monthly again.

Nevertheless, as I said, this is a wonderful publication for the handgun enthusiast. I've only missed one issue since cancelling my subscription, and honestly I already miss it! I predict I'll break down and resubscribe before the year's end. By the way, [...]Get more detail about Handguns.

I first got GL last year as a 13th birthday gift. As a homeschooler for the past few years, I find it most interesting for its unwittingly revealing information about the life of the "average" girl today.
One of the best examples is the magazine's handling of boys. Their usual topics (such as kissing, understanding your "BF", and "getting the guy") are not healthy for most 10-year-old girls to be spending their time thinking about. For 13 and up, it may be interesting and helpful. However, it deserves a caution for parents concerned about this.
Another common topic is fashion. While I did not find the clothing objectionable (although very expensive!), the makeup is far overdone. They dedicate at least a page per issue on all things makeup, be it eyeshadow or lip gloss or eyeliner or even foundation. The use of eyeshadow on the models is ridiculous - they can best be compared to traffic lights.
The focus on celebrities is maddening. Every issue has yet another "star" on it, and the magazine's favorite myth is "Celebrities: They're Just Like You!" Talented people can be great role models. However, they often have to deal with different issues and lead different lives. Why not feature more "wholesome" role models?
The last complaint is their frequent use of "teen speak". The entire thing is barely decipherable to my esteemed mother. For me, it was difficult at first - rather like learning another language. Their use of BF for boyfriend, BFF/bestie for best friend, and 'rent for parent barely is the tip of the iceberg. It does considerably abate once one leaves the Fashion section, after which they adopt a less perky and annoying tone.
I do commend GL for its handling of tough topics. I never got one about teen pregnancy, but it did have important subjects such as depression, relationship abuse, and drug abuse. Appropriate for 10-year-olds? Probably not. But for the 13-and-up crowd, it's crucial stuff.
Also good is their "Healthy You" program. It doesn't cover losing weight, but just staying in shape and eating healthy. This isn't as good for younger girls, but good habits are never too early.

BOTTOM LINE: Girls' Life really depends on your outlook on parenting and what is healthy for your daughter. Many parents may find that 10-and-up is more along the lines of 13-and-up. The magazine is great, Amazon customer service is the best, Synapes Services Inc. who the subscription comes from is not worth taking the risk. When I subscribed to Weight Watchers it says that it will take 12 to 16 weeks for your first issue to arrive. Well, I received two OLD issues in one day. One of the issues was outdated by two months. They other issue had been out for over a month. When I contacted Synapes Services Inc., Tracy called and left me a voice message saying "tough, these issues count towards your subscription". I called their number again and NOW their customer service put me in through to Amazon.com customer service and in about 15 minutes the end date for the subscription was changed.

My comments are not about the magazine itself and more about the publisher. I bought this 2-year subscription from Meredith Publishing on Amazon on June 14th. It is now almost 3 months later and I have yet to receive a single copy of it! I contacted the publisher email address and get a bunch of automated replies with no real help or answers to my questions. The last automated email said "We are extending your subscription to compensate for the inconvenience you experienced. Please allow six to eight weeks for the change in your expiration date to appear on your address label". At this point, I am not even sure where to go to receive a refund.

I find that getting a fitness magazine every month helps me to keep up my motivation to stay healthy and workout/eat right. Shape is nice because it has new recipes/health news/workouts each month, which keeps me from getting bored with my routine...I can just pick up something new to spice things up! I would probably rate it similarly to Fitness magazine or Women's Health (though Women's Health has more non-workout related content, I would say).

That said, it is very irritating that I see the magazine on news stands weeks before it actually comes in the mail. It's obviously a better deal (financially) to get a subscription than to buy it full price every month, but it is annoying to have to wait extra time to get the magazine. I first learned of Clean Eating magazine when I randomly picking up a copy of Oxygen magazine. I'm a fairly active person, but had been in the fitness/nutrition doldrums for a while. Food was boring me, frankly. Healthy food most especially. I dreaded mealtimes because of my indecision and lack of inspiration, which had only been made worse in recent years by the addition of a fussy British husband who has very particular ideas about what constitutes "real food". I was eating out about 90% of the time, and not particularly enjoying the experience of cooking and eating in.

Enter Clean Eating (CE) magazine. The few CE snippets I was able to glean from that copy of Oxygen (along with some great tips I got from the CE website and fan blogs) was enough to kick-start my new addiction. The recipes are fun, simple, tasty, and HEALTHY. I'd resigned myself that despite my fairly active lifestyle and healthy food choices, I was at my body's "comfortable maintenance weight". 2 months of Clean Eating later, I've effortlessly lost 5 lbs. I'm hardly ever hungry (and if I am, it's because I wasn't paying attention and skipped a snack). My energy levels are through the roof. The recipes have kept me and my picky husband interested all the while.

With most magazines I end up clipping one or two recipes. I *gut* Clean Eating... everything is super-tasty, and a totally feasible amount of effort, even on a weeknight. After experimenting with 30+ recipes, I've only had one "meh" experience. Those odds are as good or better than any other recipe resource I've tried. I've even heard about one reader who uses the magazines as her cookbooks!

Which I guess leads me to the bottom-line: health aside, these recipes are just GOOD. I never find myself thinking, "Oh, this was nice... but would have been so much tastier if I could have used XYZ." Nope. This is real-deal yummy eating, folks. Part of me wants to shout about Clean Eating mag from the mountain tops, but part of me wants to be greedy and keep my new secret weapon safe. In December, Nylon claimed to be partnering a 1-year free subscription with Urban Outfitters. They received some good press and this offer was featured on a lot of websites. As a 16 year old bored of teeny-bop magazines such as Seventeen, I decided to try it. I signed up in early January for the free subscription and when I went on their website it said I was going to get the March issue. After waiting over 2 months which is a long time, I went on their website to see what was up. Apparently, my subscription "FAILED". Today, they send me an email saying that the "FREE-subscription holiday offer was extended only to Urban Outfitter customers who responded by the date given. Perhaps the third-party site you visited had an outdated link". If so, NYLON magazine, why wouldn't you take the link down to avoid the confusion? Or better yet, why didn't you simply send an email as soon as I subscribed to tell me that the offer was null. Now, they keep bombarding me with emails asking me to pay $10 and get a free t-shirt with a NYLON logo. Maybe I should subscribe and burn the t-shirt. When it comes down to it, don't bother subscribing for this magazine. It appears that a lot of customers never get their magazine delivered. Shame on you NYLON. This magazine is SUPER cheap. I paid $10 for TWO YEARS of this magazine.

pros: no wallflowers here. This magazine is different. I have seen the evolution of this mag since the first issue and so glad they got rid of the gossip section. My favorite part is the DIY clothing transformation. The spreads have also been super saturated lately. The size is super cute and handy.

cons: no one would wear this stuff. The ads and the strange combinations of clothing articles contrast greatly. They make those poor girls wear the strangest things. I suspect some of the pairings are completely random and last minute. The writing is very simple. The articles are a rehash of teen issues that have been going on for decades. Vogue articles, on the other hand, are delicious to read.

I am not sure what I expected but Budget Travel did not do anything for me. My wife and I are in our 30s and have a desire to see the United States and the rest of the world. I was hoping for reviews of resorts and cruise lines and fun trips that were planned out for us. Most of the places reviewed did not interest us and seemed to be geared towards older couples who had time to take weeks off for a vacation. By the end of the year it seemed like the magazine was becoming very predictible.
